FAQ

1. Who qualifies for internships?

Internship candidates must be familiar with their institution's internship requirements, including the existence of a formal internship relationship that should exist (if applicable) between Centra Mental Health Services (or the particular service line) and the applicable college/university.

  • Centra Bridges Treatment Center has 5 undergraduate internships each semester. Teachers needing internships are encouraged to apply. Since teachers, unlike counselors, do not need to be supervised by a licensed therapist, there is more flexibility in what we can offer.
  • Centra Piedmont Psychiatric Center has internships only for those who are pursuing doctorate level degrees -- Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree or Ph.D., excluding doctoral students from counseling programs.
  • Centra Mental Health Consultation Services only has Master's level internships --2 per semester.
  • Centra Adult Acute Psychiatric Program only has Master's level internships -- only 2 available per year.
  • Centra Rivermont Schools accepts interns at all nine locations. For locations of our nine Centra Rivermont Schools, please click here. Undergraduates as well as graduates qualify. Fall and summer internships are available.
  • Centra Child and Adolescent Acute Psychiatric Program has 4 slots per semester (summer, fall and spring semesters) for undergraduates only majoring in social work or psychology.
  • Centra Pathways Treatment Center offers internships to Master's level counseling students only.

2. If I volunteered in the past with Centra Mental Health Services, and now need to do an internship, can I apply the volunteer hours towards the internship?

Volunteer hours cannot be applied toward internship hours.

3. Can I do a practicum with one of the service lines?

If you are able to commit to an internship in addition to the practicum, Centra Adult Acute Psychiatric Program will consider you for an internship.

4. I'm a student at Liberty University. What is the first step I need to take?

Gary Sibcy, II, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist at Centra Piedmont Psychiatric Center, in addition to being on the faculty of Liberty University as the Director of the Counseling Program. For internships with Centra Adult Acute Psychiatric Program or with Centra Piedmont Psychiatric Center, he is your first point of contact. For internships at Centra Piedmont Psychiatric Center, only Ph.D. or Psy.D. students will be considered.

5. Is there an application I need to complete?

A resume is required to start the process. Qualified applicants will be granted interviews. Background checks, finger printing and an online orientation course are all required for those offered internship opportunities. Failure to pass the background check or to satisfy the other requirements will disqualify applicants.

6. Do I need to contact my school?

Students do need to be enrolled in accredited, degree programs to be considered for internships. Internship candidates must be familiar with their institution's internship requirements, including the existence of a formal internship relationship that should exist (if applicable) between Centra Mental Health Services (or the particular service line) and the applicable college/university.
