Centra Senior Psychiatric Program

Our Programnurse patient

Centra Senior Psychiatric Program treats adults 60 years of age and older who are in crisis and in need of immediate stabilization. Short-term psychiatric treatment is provided in an acute inpatient setting. Besides crisis stabilization, the program provides diagnostic evaluation, focused therapy and group counseling. Patients are admitted to a safe and secure environment at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital. The average length of stay is 10 days.

Through a detailed evaluation of disease states, emotions, behaviors, temperament and life story, our team provides a focused diagnosis and develops a personalized and comprehensive treatment plan. Our goal is to assist the patient in working toward maintaining and improving independence and quality of life.

  • Other acute/chronic psychiatric conditions

Members of Our Team

betz-2001-2Our treatment team includes a board certified geriatric psychiatrist (medical director), Dr. Peter Betz, as well as mental health nurses, social workers, licensed professional counselors, pastoral counselors and mental health counselors.

The goal of Centra Intake Center staff is to provide fast, efficient and friendly service to all mental health professionals seeking hospitalization for seniors in crisis.

Accreditation & Licensing

Our program is licensed by the State of Virginia and accredited by the Joint Commission. Centra is also Magnet designated, an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to select hospitals that satisfy a rigorous set of criteria designed to measure the strength and quality of their nursing staff.

Cost of Care

Our services are covered in full or part by Medicare and most group or individual insurance plans. Financial counselors are available to assist with payment planning.
