At Centra, the health and well-being of our communities across central and southwest Virginia are at the heart of everything we do. Among the most pressing issues we face is the growing demand for accessible and timely mental and behavioral health services. As revealed in our triennial Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs), conducted in both 2021 and 2024, mental and behavioral health continues to be one of the most critical needs in our region.
In fact, in two of the three assessments completed in 2024, “mental health problems” ranked as the leading health condition impacting community well-being. These findings reflect a nationwide trend but also highlight the urgency of developing local, meaningful solutions. Centra has responded with targeted investments and innovative care models to ensure individuals in crisis have the support they need, when and where they need it.
Innovative Solutions to Meet Mental Health Needs
EmPATH Unit: Redefining Crisis Care
In September 2023, we opened Virginia’s first Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) Unit at Lynchburg General Hospital. This innovative unit serves as an extension of the emergency department, designed specifically for individuals experiencing mental health crises.
Unlike traditional emergency room settings, the EmPATH Unit is intentionally built to promote healing through open spaces that encourage social interaction, movement, and reduced isolation. This thoughtful environment supports a more compassionate and effective approach to behavioral health emergencies.
Piedmont Psychiatric Adult Urgent Care: Bridging the Gap
To further expand timely access to psychiatric services, Centra launched the Piedmont Psychiatric Adult Urgent Care (PPAUC) clinic in November 2024. This facility represents a significant step forward in addressing social determinants and health inequities that often impact mental health care access.
At PPAUC, patients are seen by a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) who assesses their needs, treats acute symptoms, and coordinates follow-up care. By providing services that previously required an emergency department visit, this clinic offers a safe, specialized setting where patients can receive the care they need—without unnecessary delays or stress.
Joint Venture with Lifepoint Behavioral Health: Elevating Inpatient Services
Recognizing the critical need for high-quality inpatient psychiatric care, Centra entered into a joint venture with Lifepoint Behavioral Health in 2023. This partnership will bring a new state-of-the-art inpatient facility to our region, significantly increasing bed availability and enhancing patient care.
Lifepoint was chosen for this collaboration based on their strong track record in developing and managing behavioral health hospitals and their commitment to clinical excellence. Together, we are laying the foundation for a more robust, sustainable behavioral health system that meets the long-term needs of our community.
A Continued Commitment
Centra remains steadfast in its mission to improve the health of the communities we serve. Our expanding mental and behavioral health services reflect a deep and ongoing commitment to tackling one of today’s most urgent health challenges. With new facilities, innovative care models, and strategic partnerships, we are building a future where mental wellness is prioritized, stigma is reduced, and compassionate care is always within reach.
